Two-Way Radios for Construction

What to consider when choosing two-way radios for your construction site.

With roughly around 61,000 injuries on site every year, the dangers of the construction industry are clear. Have you considered using two-way radios to improve your site's safety? In this blog, we discuss how the utilization of radios can be of great assistance on your construction site, and we answer a couple of frequently asked questions that we're asked by customers.

The construction industry is broad involving contractors, builders, builders’ merchants, crane operators, scaffolders, construction engineers and plumbers to name a few. Two-way radios have an application in just about any of those operations, and over the years this has become more and more apparent.

These are some of the important benefits of having good communication on a construction site:
  • Better perception of hazards, improved working conditions, and safety performance
  • Good safety record
  • Empowered employee safety, improved relations, and morale
  • Improved productivity
  • Improved quality standards

So it's no secret that on construction sites, safety is key.  And two-way radios are the perfect tool for your next construction project, to keep teams connected via clear audio and superb battery life.  Furthermore, a good radio system will provide coverage across your entire site, even as it grows and evolves.

Thankfully, we offer a wide range of quality radios, and there are a variety of cost-effective solutions that are right at your fingertips. We have selected the following for their reliability and resilience, meeting the demands on a construction site:

Motorola (Vertex Standard) EVX-S24

Hytera BD615

Motorola DP2400e

Hytera BP515

Hytera BP565

Do I need an Ofcom Licence?
This is one of the most frequently asked questions that contractors ask us about using two-way radios. Two-way radios do require a licence, unless you are using licence-free (PMR446) walkie talkies, however, we would not recommend these for private communication on a construction site. A basic radio licence costs £75 for five years use, and this covers all of your radios plus any new radios you might add. More info about radio licensing here.

What range can I expect?
Range is dependent on the territory you are using the two-way radios in. A quick conversation with us can point you to a solution that is best suited to the size of your particular site. A basic 'radio-to-radio' set-up will provide around 2 miles of coverage, and for most sites this should be satisfactory, but if need be, this range can be increased by installing a repeater/base station to take coverage out to around 10 miles.

Ask us about these products and how they can help to improve safety and efficiency on your construction site. Here at The Radio Shop we have been involved in the two-way radio industry for 50 years and have built up an enviable reputation as communication specialists.
